And last but not least, something to give hope!


As Christians, we are always a people of Hope. This is why Pope Benedict XVI's motto for his visit to our country last spring was "Christ (is) Our Hope"; and His preceding encyclical was entitled, Spe Salvi ("Saved by Hope") referencing St. Paul's letter to the Romans (Rm.8:24): "For in hope we were saved. Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance." This message of hope is then underscored by Paul a few verses later in that same chapter: "God works all things for the good of those who love Him."(Rm.8:28) Surely, we are deeply saddened by our nation's election of a man whose values are so antithetical to God's values for human life and marriage. But, as hopeful Christians, we are always greatly comforted by the fact that God knew and planned for this election outcome from all eternity. And, true to His Word, God will work even this election and "all things for the good of those who love Him" — that's you, your children, your holy family. So, remain steadfast in faith, in hope, in love, in prayer. Our hope is in the Lord Who made heaven and earth…that's far beyond the power of any elected official.
So, let us mourn over our nation's moral confusion, while we also know that "Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted."(Mt.5:4) Let us continue to pray and work for our nation's conversion, knowing that it was only by His merciful "Amazing Grace" that we were/are/will be saved from our wretchedness, and that His "Amazing Grace" may yet save our beloved nation from going further down the wretched path of hostility toward Human Life and Marriage, as they were gifted and ordained by God.
If that sounds naive, like hoping in hopeless circumstances, let us remember that St. Paul preached his message of hope to various churches (including Phillipians, Ephesians, and Collosians) from a prison cell: "The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Phil.4:5-7).
In closing, let us recall that Paul told the Christians in Rome (who were being persecuted to the point of death) that "we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that afflictions produce endurance, endurance proven character, proven character hope, and hope does not disappoint" (Rm.5:3-5). Our hope is in the Lord Who remains as Sovereign today as He was yesterday, in an "unshakable Kingdom"(Heb.12:28). Let us continue to work and pray for the building of His Kingdom here on earth, knowing that He has perfectly equipped us for our holy work.
